[명사]

사람, 사물, 장소 등의 이름을 나타내는 말

 

◉ 셀 수 있는 명사 - 형태가 있는 사물

– 단수형 : 명사가 하나 a/ an a cup, an apple

- 복수형 : 명사가 두 개 이상 -s/ -es girls, buses

 

① 규칙 변화

대부분의 명사	+ -s	girl→girls, bird→birds book→books, pen→pens
-s/-ss/-sh/-ch/-x 로 끝나는 명사	+ -es	bus→buses, dress→dresses dish→dishes, watch→watches box→boxes
[자음 + o] 로 끝나는 명사	+ -es	tomato→tomatoes, potato→potatoes <예외> piano→pianos, photo→photos
[모음 + o] 로 끝나는 명사	+ -s	radio→radios, zoo→zoos
[자음 + y] 로 끝나는 명사	y를 i로 바꾸고 + -es	baby→babies, city→cities cherry→cherries, lady→ladies
[모음 + y] 로 끝나는 명사	+ -s	boy→boys, key→keys toy→toys, monkey→monkeys
-f/-fe 로 끝나는 명사	f/fe를 v로 바꾸고 + -es	leaf→leaves, knife→knives wife→wives <예외> roof→roofs

 

② 불규칙 변화

단어의 일부가 바뀌는 경우	foot→feet, tooth→teeth, child→children man→men, woman→women, person→people mouse→mice, goose→geese, ox→oxen
단수와 복수가 같은 경우	fish→fish, sheep→sheep, deer→deer

 

 

◉ 셀 수 없는 명사

셀 수 없는 명사는

개수를 셀 수 없으므로 a/an을 붙일 수 없고, 복수형을 만들 수 없다.

 

[셀 수 없는 명사의 종류]

① 물질명사: 물, 공기, 모래처럼 일정한 형태가 없는 물질

액체, 고체, 기체	액체 - milk, water, juice 등 고체 - gold, ice, paper 등 기체 - air, smoke, wind 등
음식	bread, butter, meat, rice, bacon 등
자연현상	snow, rain 등
가루	sand, salt, flour, sugar 등

 

 

② 추상명사: 사랑, 건강처럼 눈에 보이지 않는 명사

대표 추상명사	love, health, homework, time, money, weather, peace, luck 등
언어, 과목, 운동	언어- English, Chinese 등 과목- math, science, art, history, music 등 운동- baseball, soccer 등

 

 

③ 고유명사: 사람, 지역, 날짜 등의 고유한 이름을 나타내는 명사

사람, 지역, 날짜

Jane, Peter, Seoul, Asia, Sunday, April, Christmas 등

고유명사의 첫 글자는 대문자로 쓴다.

 

[셀 수 없는 명사의 수]

물질명사 앞에 단위를 붙여 수량을 표현 [단위 + of + 물질명사]

a cup of 한 잔	water, coffee, milk, tea 등
a glass of 한 잔	water, coke, juice, milk 등
a bottle of 한 병	water, juice, ketchup, wine 등
a bowl of 한 그릇	soup, salad, cereal, rice 등
a can of 한 캔	coke, juice, corn, tuna 등
a loaf of 한 덩어리	bread, meat, cheese 등
a piece[sheet] of 한 장	paper 등
a piece[slice] of 한 조각	cheese, pizza, cake, bread, bacon 등
a box[pack] of 한 상자	cereal 등
a bag of 한 자루(봉지)	flour, sugar, rice 등
a bar of 한 개	chocolate, soap 등
